Life on the Oshoro Maru V

This ship is the 5th generation of Oshoro Maru, a research and training vessel owned by Hokkaido University. It has just launched this year to replace the Oshoro Maru IV which had operated since 1984. On November 18th-20th 2014 I became one of the lucky students to join on board with the Oshoro Maru V.

We set off on 18th afternoon from Hakodate Research Center for Fisheries and Ocean. All the ship crews and student were standing on the deck and waving to the crew member on the land, which was quite romantic.

This education cruise is organized by the Ecosus class, a course from Center for Sustainability Science, Hokkaido University. During those three days we learnt about the interrelation of the ocean ecosystem, technology and economic activity. We analyzed the biological, chemical and physical structure of the ocean, how it affects the fishery commodity available, and how we use the technology to promote the sustainable usage of fishery resources.

We caught the plankton using the plankton-net, and observed it.

We analyzed the chemical composition of the ocean water in various depth using the CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth - profiler).

We used the Toredas application to predict the location of various fishery commodity and fished the squid.

We analyzed the squid body.

We had delicious foods.

And we met PARE friends :)
