Development of Smart City in Asia
Environmental degradation has been caused by human factors such as population growth and excessive human activities. Furthermore, agriculture intensification, rapidly growth of globalization economy, urbanization and unprecedented demand of natural resources are also the causes.
Java in Indonesia as an example, the island has the large population and rapid industrial area expansion. They are the causes of environmental degradation in urban area. Also, increase in food demands such as coffee, palm and sugarcane and consumption of energy such as wind energy, solar energy and natural gas are increasing. Thus, it can be seen that high demand of food and energy influence on increase of natural resources consumption. Therefore, practical solution of PARE chain – population, activities, resources and environment - should be considered to cure environmental degradation.
Sumatra is another example. A beautiful island with wealth environmental resources for instance geothermal, oil, coal bed methane, coal and gas, ocean, lake, river, land and ethnic. Sumatra also has the huge area with 480,847 km2 and population with 47,005,538 people. However, the city has the lack of well management and utilization of environmental resources. Therefore Sumatra Island has been taken as a sample city to be considered as a smart city development plan.
Smart city is a solution to utilize the environmental usage in the big city. Smart city is smart everything and centralized eco-friendly industry. Smart city can be described as smart energy, smart building, smart healthcare, smart technology, smart education and etc. There are several kinds of technologies can be adopted to build smart city with environmental friendly.
1.  Agriculture management - Pre and postharvest and biomass utilization can be taken to reduce Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission for sustainable agriculture.
2. Fisheries – Inland saline aquaculture can improve productivities and reduce the impact of Plankton drop causing fish dead.
3.  Animal Husbandry - Formulated feed and biomass production.
4.  Energy – Usage of alternative energy such as wind, water and solar energy.
5. Smart Home – Home Automation for energy consumption optimization.
6. Hi-tech Transportation - Bullet train and real-time monitor.
7. Modern Hospital - Online patient status and doctor to reduce usage of paper.
8. Communication – Wi max, 4G for faster and no-boundary of business and education activities.
9. Education – Distance learning or e-learning.
However, there are not just technologies that can achieve the objective of smart city.  There are several actions that must be considered such as education, promotion to the city, proper planning and management and government supported. Thus, technologies and good methodology can lead to better life quality which is the objective of smart city.
In the future, people in Sumatra might be able to see mobile phone and house with solar energy, efficient distance learning, very high speed communication, online hospital and sustainable agriculture. Now, Sumatra government has started smart city plan consisting of city design, cost of investment, timeline development and society preparation and education. In 2035, Sumatra will be a city of smart technologies with environmental friendly and a good life quality. Therefore, smart city is not just an abstract concept, but it can be done with proper plan and society cooperative as in Sumatra.
